About Kingmakers of Oakland’s Spring Symposium

What is Spring Symposium?

Kingmakers of Oakland’s Spring Symposium is an annual in-person and virtual 3-day, convening that brings together influencers to discuss and create action plans that address the systems, culture, and conditions that improve educational and life outcomes for Black students.

Who should attend Spring Symposium?

Educators, school district leaders, students, families, policymakers, philanthropists, and education advocates are encouraged to attend to ensure full representation of voices in the complete school and community ecosystem.

2023 SPRING SYMPOSIUM – STEP UP TO THE MIC

On March 23-25, we will be holding our annual Spring Symposium with the theme “STEP UP TO THE M.I.C.,” which is about amplifying Multiracial Intergenerational Cross-functional voices to transform education.

Our bi-annual convenings are highly anticipated events that gather participants who come together to learn best practices and engage with diverse stakeholders from across the country.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Educators, school district leaders, students, families, policymakers, philanthropists, and education advocates are encouraged to attend to ensure full representation of voices in the complete school and community ecosystem.

A unique aspect of the KOO conference experience is that it includes and is informed by youth devoted to transformation. This intentional design aspect creates an unforgettable experience that has been described as,

“A powerful, joyful, loving and hopeful learning space. A great work model of what transformed systems can look and feel like.”– Fall Forum 2022 attendee

We will be back in person for the Spring Symposium, after overwhelming feedback from our past Fall Forum. We will also live stream over zoom on March 23rd and 24th for participants who want to join virtually.

WHAT TO EXPECT

March 23 (9:00am-4:30pm): A King designed interactive experience will reveal the innate brilliance of Black boys and the urgency to build the collective will to drive permanent narrative change.

BONUS: (5:00pm-8:00pm) The Griots of Oakland 10 year Anniversary. This celebration focused on narrative change promises to be an unforgettable event that includes augmented reality, spoken word and much more. Intergenerational voices will be uplifted in an immersive evening of Augemented Reality art and live storytelling with some very special guests at the Kissel Hotel.

March 24 (9:00am-4:30pm): District and educator focused dialogues with working sessions aimed at removing obstacles to drive change, leveraging data-driven methodologies and learnings.

March 25 (10:00am-2:00pm): The Student Showcase gives attendees an opportunity to experience Kingmakers of Oakland’s unique programs for our students. This youth-curated exposition demonstrates how our Kings interpret their learnings and carry them into the classroom and in their lives.

Kingmakers of Oakland has received national recognition from press and funders for its unwavering commitment to centering Black boys while leveraging a Targeted Universalism framework, which unapologetically addresses the unique and persistent barriers faced by Black boys in order to uplift entire school systems and communities.
