About JAZZ & BLUES WOMEN BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
As we celebrate International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, we pay tribute to female-identified jazz and blues artists who were born in the month of March. These musical standouts cross many Black American Music genres, decades of American music history, and have made deep impacts on the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. In this series we will explore the life and music of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the guitar-wielding gospel pioneer who deeply influenced rock & roll; pioneering singer and bandleader Ina Ray Hutton; jazz piano greats Jessica Williams, Marian McPartland, Eliane Elias, Marilyn Crispell, and Renee Rosnes, and the iconic voices of jazz, soul, blues, and pop, including Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughn, Astrud Gilberto, Norah Jones, and many more. Join guitarist and music educator Terrence Brewer on this informative and musically intoxicating journey.
